In short
Syli Labs offers Valkey as a managed cache and queue. Valkey speaks the same protocol as Redis: your Redis libraries work unchanged, with the REDIS_URL variable. We chose it for its open-source license (BSD), which lets us offer it as a managed service.
What Valkey is
Valkey is an in-memory database, forked from Redis and maintained by the Linux Foundation. It’s used as a cache, for storing sessions and as a simple queue.
Why not Redis itself
The latest versions of Redis are no longer under a classic open-source license. Valkey keeps the BSD license: we can offer it as a managed service with no risk for you or for us.
What it changes for you
- Your Redis libraries (ioredis, redis-py, Redix, Predis…) work as they are;
- linking it adds
REDIS_URLto your service; - Valkey is always private: reachable only from your site’s services.
What about Dragonfly?
We ruled it out: its license forbids offering it as a managed service.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to change my code?
No, as long as you read the cache address from REDIS_URL.
Is my Valkey data backed up?
Valkey is mainly a cache: the data can be rebuilt. Keep important data in PostgreSQL.
